Opera Casting Demographics Study
Each May during AAPI month, we continue our annual demographics study of casting at American professional opera companies. The aim of this initiative is to inform conversations about diversity in casting with data and numbers so that these discussions can be productive and constructive.
Our study focuses on each company’s announced plans for the upcoming seasons. We also examine racial and gender diversity among conductors and directors, as well as including unannounced roles in casting. All statistics are based on casting publicized on opera company’s websites. Categorization was done to the best of our abilities by our team of volunteers.
We recognize that casting decisions and timing are intricately impacted by numerous factors. We use these statistics as a snapshot of the moment and seek to work hand-in-hand with companies to help showcase the diverse and incredible talent of Asian creatives in opera. In 2023, AOA partnered with the O’ Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs of Indiana University, Opera America, and the National Opera Association for the first stage of a broader study that attempted to track demographics from the university and conservatory level through the professional level.

The Peer Mentorship program features a monthly virtual gathering space where AOA members share lived experiences, exchange resources, and support one another across every stage of a career.
Each session centers on a topic — from navigating identity on stage to the practical realities of building a sustainable life in opera. Every other month, we feature a member of our community.
